Getting to know Your Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC)
What is SEAC? What do they do? & Why would it be important to me? These are all great questions and hopefully you will find this information useful and the acronym (SEAC) worth remembering. The Ministry of Education has set out in its legislation that all Ontario School Boards (Private and Catholic) are required to have an Advisory Committee that meets monthly during the school year and that Committee has specific responsibilities to fulfill including:
To ensure that the rights of students with special needs within the Board are being met;
To provide specific information, assistance and advice to parents and guardians whose children may require additional support.
To make recommendations to the Board concerning the establishment and development of special education programs and services;
To participate in the Board's annual budget process as it relates to special education; and
To participate in the Board's annual review of the Special Education Plan.
LDA-N is well represented at the SEAC table for both school boards here in Niagara and we bring the resources, findings and opportunities back to the organization for your access and benefit. If you would like to learn more about SEAC and how your representatives have been advocating for our learners who live with LD's, give us a call or drop us a line.
