What is a Learning Disability?

Learning disabilities are information processing disorders which may affect:
  
  Thinking, listening, and speaking

   Reading, writing, and spelling

   Arithmetic and mathematics  

   Social skills


Common Learning Disabilities Include:   

Dyslexia (reading), Dyscalculia (math), Dysgraphia (writing), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Central Auditory Disorder (CAP)

While a learning disability is a lifelong condition, it is not: Low Intelligence. Mental Illness, or Autism.

These are different challenges that people face and require different coping methods and support.
 
Common Signs of Learning Disabilities

People with learning disabilities will exhibit some, but not all of these symptoms:

Difficulty in reading, writing, spelling or arithmetic

Verbal skills that are much better developed than writing skills

Trouble with auditory and/or visual memory

Difficulty remembering and following a sequence of instructions

Weaknesses in coordination and spatial orientation

Lack of organizational skills

Difficulty with time management

Weak problem-solving strategies

Short attention span or distractability

Poor or inappropriate social skills

What Can be Done about Learning Disabilities?

The most important components of future success for individuals with learning disabilities include:

Identification of the learning disability  

Appropriate special education support

Helping individuals to understand their learning disabilities and how it affects daily life  

Someone who believes in and supports them

Appropriate coping skills and ways of compensating for the impact of the learning disability

Accommodation of the learning disability through assistive devices such as a computer or through other techniques.

The learning disability does not go away but success is possible.  It is never too late to seek help.  By developing skills of coping, compensation and self-compensation and self-advocacy, adults with learning disabilities can take control of their lives and achieve their potential.
